Why Collectors Prize Original Serialized Stories

Original issues of The Strand Magazine featuring Sherlock Holmes’ adventures are highly sought after because they represent the first printed appearances of these detective stories. Unlike later book compilations, these issues present the stories in the serialized format that first hooked readers in Victorian England.

Early issues of The Strand were later bound into hardcover cloth or leather volumes, containing a half-year's worth of issues. However, issues which include Doyle's detective stories still in their original pictorial paper wrappers are the very sought after. These paper covers, with interior illustrations and period advertisements, have become increasingly rare over time, which is one reason why they fetch high prices at auction.

Pro Tip: Not ALL issues of The Strand in original wraps are super valuable; typically just issues which contain Sherlock Holmes stories.

For context, while an early issue of The Strand Magazine featuring Holmes stories can sell for a hundred dollars and up, a standard 19th-century issue with no Holmes content often sells for as little as $5. Issues from the 20th century, when the magazine continued to run until 1950, also commonly appear at low price points, sometimes even less than a few dollars.

Notable Auction Sales of The Strand Magazine

However, some copies featuring the first appearances of Sherlock Holmes in print have fetched eye-popping sums:

In 2022, Christie’s sold an exceptional 25-volume set of The Strand Magazine for $13,860. This set included the earliest serialized Holmes stories in their original wrappers and was housed in custom slipcases.

In 2021, Heritage Auctions sold a complete run of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes serialized in The Strand for $45,000. This set, published from 1891 to 1927, featured seventy-nine complete issues of The Strand.

These sales underscore the collectible value of original serial publications, especially those that have retained their original format.

The Serialized Origin of Sherlock Holmes in The Strand

The debut of Holmes in The Strand in 1891 turned Arthur Conan Doyle into a sensation. Readers were on the edge of their seats and eagerly awaited each monthly installment. By 1893, Doyle had published 23 short stories featuring Holmes and Watson, cementing their spot in popular culture.

  • First novel: A Study in Scarlet (1887), published in book form by Ward, Lock & Co.
  • Second novel: The Sign of the Four (1890), serialized in Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine.
  • Short story debut: A Scandal in Bohemia (1891), published in The Strand Magazine.

The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (1892–1893) included some of Holmes’ most memorable cases, including The Final Problem, where he battled his infamous foe, Professor Moriarty.

Sidney Paget’s Illustrations: Bringing Holmes to Life

Sidney Paget’s illustrations were instrumental in shaping our image of Holmes. First appearing in The Strand in 1891, Paget’s drawings portrayed Holmes as sharp-featured and intellectual, often seen in his deerstalker hat and with a pipe in hand.

Paget’s artwork added atmosphere and depth to the stories, from shadowy London streets to pivotal crime scenes. His illustrations became so iconic that they forever influenced how readers and filmmakers envisioned Holmes and Watson.
