RMS Queen Mary 8 A.M. Report Diagram

N / A

$27

RMS Queen Mary WWII Document

In 2020, Britannic Auctions sold an original WWII-era 8 A.M. Report Diagram from the RMS Queen Mary for $27. This hand-colored chart, measuring 8” x 13”, tracked the ship’s fuel, ballast, fresh water, and reserve feed levels. While undated, it was stored with similar documents from 1944-45, during the Queen Mary’s service as a troop transport ship in World War II.

This rare piece of Queen Mary WWII history came from the private collection of John C. Wells (1909–2000). Wells had business ties to Long Beach, California, where the ship was later converted into a museum and hotel.

The Queen Mary in WWII: The Grey Ghost That Carried Thousands

Before becoming a floating hotel, the RMS Queen Mary was a luxury ocean liner for Cunard, known for its lavish interiors and record-breaking speed. That changed in 1940 when the British government requisitioned the ship for military service.

Painted navy grey, she was renamed "The Grey Ghost" due to her ability to outrun German U-boats. The ship carried up to 16,000 troops per voyage, making her one of the largest and fastest troop transports of WWII.

Managing resources on board was critical. Every drop of fuel, fresh water, and ballast had to be tracked carefully. The 8 A.M. Report Diagram helped officers monitor these supplies during each crossing.

Collecting RMS Queen Mary Documents: What’s Valuable?

The Queen Mary sailed for decades, producing countless ship logs, reports, and technical charts. While plenty of documents still exist, those from her early years or WWII service are far more desirable.

For collectors of ocean liner memorabilia, original ship logs and technical reports provide a unique connection to maritime history. Some wartime documents have fetched strong prices at auction:

  • Chief Officer’s Load Line Report (Pre-Maiden Voyage, 1936)Sold for $40 (2017)
  • WWII RMS Queen Mary Damage Report (1945, Atlantic Storm Report)Sold for $26 (2020, Britannic Auctions)
  • Boat and Fire Drill Report (1955, Post-War Service)Sold for $6 (2014)

While routine safety reports and post-war documents tend to sell for less, wartime ship logs, damage reports, and other rare collectibles from WWII command higher prices.
