The Josie Earp Theory

One of the more debated aspects of the Kaloma photograph is its alleged connection to Josephine "Josie" Earp, the common-law wife of Wyatt Earp. Josie (1861–1944) played a significant role in Wyatt’s life, with their story forming part of the Old West’s enduring legacy.

The connection between Josie and Kaloma originated with Glenn Boyer, an Earp historian who featured the image on the cover of his 1967 book, I Married Wyatt Earp. Although Glenn Boyer marketed the book as Josie’s memoir, critics have since discredited it, raising doubts about its historical authenticity. Boyer’s claim regarding the photograph further complicated its provenance and added fuel to debates about its subject’s identity.

Photography expert Jeremy Rowe has explored this discussion, offering insights into the photograph’s origins and its significance. Rowe’s article provides a well-researched analysis of the image, examining alternative theories about its history. Similarly, True West Magazine has highlighted additional possibilities for identifying the woman in the photograph, but a definitive answer remains elusive.

What Are Kaloma Prints Worth?

The value of Kaloma prints varies depending on their age, condition, and presentation. Authentic 1914 prints in their original frames have sold for as little as $50 and as high as several hundred dollars at auction. Frame designs can differ quite a bit between prints.

In addition to photographs, Kaloma items include sheet music. Cosmopolitan Music Publishing Company published a hesitation waltz titled 'Kaloma' in the early 1900s. Original copies of this sheet music in good condition have sold for around $70.
