John F. Kennedy Signed & Inscribed “Profiles in Courage”, 1957

John F. Kennedy Signed Profiles in Courage

In 2017, Britannic Auctions sold a John F. Kennedy signed first edition of Profiles in Courage for $3,300. This book was originally signed by Kennedy for a young Oregon boy, Barrett Tillman, in 1959 during his presidential campaign. Decades later, Tillman consigned the book himself, providing direct provenance and a clear chain of custody—crucial for autograph authentication.

During his campaign stop in Oregon, Kennedy personally signed this 1957 edition, inscribing it in green ink on the title page. The message read: “To Barrett Tillman, with warmest regards, John Kennedy, USS - Mass.”

At the time, Kennedy was traveling extensively, meeting voters, and building his national political presence. Tillman later became a well-known author on naval and aviation history, further adding to the book’s historical significance.

The book also contains an inscription from Tillman’s aunt, who obtained the signature in April 1958, adding a key element of provenance.

About Profiles in Courage

Profiles in Courage was written by John F. Kennedy while still in the U.S. Senate. The book tells the stories of several U.S. Senators who displayed remarkable courage under political pressure.

Notable figures highlighted include John Quincy Adams, Daniel Webster, Thomas Hart Benton, Sam Houston, Edmund G. Ross, Lucius Lamar, George Norris, and Robert A. Taft. The book won the Pulitzer Prize and remains a respected work in American political history.

JFK Signed Book

The Signing of Barrett Tillman’s Copy

In November 1959, as part of his pre-campaign efforts for the 1960 Presidential election, Jack and Jackie Kennedy traveled across the United States. On November 7, 1959, they arrived in Pendleton, Oregon, attending a press conference before visiting local events, including an antique market where Jackie bought a quilt.

Later that day, Senator Kennedy spoke at a state Jaycee personal development program at Bend High cafeteria. During the event, Mrs. Beverly Tillman asked him to sign a copy of Profiles in Courage for her young son, Barrett.

Authenticity matters in presidential autographs. Since forgeries of Kennedy’s signature are common, items with strong provenance—like this book—hold greater value.

One year later, on November 8, 1960, John F. Kennedy won the election and became the 35th President of the United States.

The Importance of Provenance in JFK Signatures

John F. Kennedy’s autograph ranks among the most commonly forged presidential signatures. Authenticating a John F. Kennedy signed piece can be difficult, and collectors pay a premium for signed pieces with strong provenance, like this first edition book. Detailed records of when and where an item was signed can significantly impact its auction value.
