Harry Houdini Signed “Elliott’s Last Legacy Card Tricks”, 1923

N / A

$880

Harry Houdini Signed Book

In 2019, Britannic Auctions sold this first edition copy of Elliott's Last Legacy Card Tricks, signed by Harry Houdini, for $880. Published in New York by Adams Press in 1923, the book occupies an interesting place in magic collecting: on its own, it's an important card magic title. Add Houdini's signature, however, and it becomes something entirely different.

Unsigned copies of Elliott's Last Legacy typically sell in the $40 to $90 range, depending on condition and edition. This example realized substantially more due to its direct association with Houdini.

For collectors, that's often how the market works. Provenance, signatures, and historical associations can dramatically change value.

A Signature from Houdini's Final Year

Houdini signed this copy on January 20, 1926, while appearing at the Shubert-Belasco Theater in Washington, D.C. Remarkably, this was only about ten months before his death later that year.

That same week, Houdini was doing far more than performing. He was also speaking publicly about fraudulent mediums and spiritualist claims, a subject that occupied much of his later life.

A signed Houdini item is always desirable, but one signed during the final year of his life carries an additional layer of interest.

Dr. James Elliott: A Magician's Magician

Long before Elliott's Last Legacy appeared in print, Dr. James William Elliott had already earned the respect of his fellow magicians. Houdini himself praised Elliott's card handling, describing it as the result of years of study and dedication to the art.

Elliott briefly studied medicine before leaving for a career in magic, touring with Le Roy, Talma and Bosco and later serving as treasurer of the Magic Mystic Fraternity, one of the earliest organized magic societies.

Among magicians, Elliott is often associated with the Back Palm, one of the foundational techniques in card manipulation. While stories differ regarding its ultimate origin, few dispute Elliott's role in refining and popularizing the move.

Following Elliott's death, Houdini gathered his notes and worked to bring them into print. The project was a natural fit for Houdini, who was not only a performer but also one of the great collectors of magic literature. By the end of his life, Houdini had assembled one of the largest private magic libraries ever formed, acquiring books, manuscripts, posters, and ephemera documenting the history of conjuring

Why Collectors Still Look For Elliott's Last Legacy

Following Elliott's death, Houdini worked to organize and publish his friend's material, collaborating with Clinton Burgess to bring the book into print. The result was a volume containing more than 100 card tricks, sleights, and techniques.

Books like this occupy a unique place in magic collecting. They're not simply old books—they're working texts that influenced generations of magicians.

Collectors often look for:

  • First editions
  • Signed or inscribed copies
  • Association with notable magicians
  • Strong provenance
  • Clean, complete examples

When Houdini's signature enters the equation, the collector base expands beyond magic enthusiasts to include autograph collectors and Houdini specialists.

Auction Records: What Is It Worth?

Unsigned copies of Elliott's Last Legacy frequently appear at auction in the $30 to $90 range, though condition can have a major effect on value.

The signed copy sold by Britannic Auctions realized $880 despite not being in fine condition. The result illustrates how signatures, provenance, and direct connections to important figures in magic can dramatically influence the market.

As with many collectible magic books, no two copies are exactly alike.
