First Edition Folio
In 2016, a first edition folio of Designs for Goldsmiths, Jewellers, Etc. by Hans Holbein sold at auction for $50. Published in 1869, this folio reproduces a selection of Holbein's original designs, offering a detailed view of 16th-century ornamentation. The volume includes 20 tipped-in photographs of Holbein’s drawings, which are part of the British Museum’s collection.
This edition was curated by George William Reid, who was then the keeper of prints and drawings at the British Museum. Furthermore, it presents a diverse array of ornamental designs by Holbein, including dagger-sheaths, bracelets, rings, pommels, and heraldic devices. In addition, these designs reflect Holbein’s exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Notably, someone mounted the drawings in a small quarto volume in 1752. Over time, scholars have widely recognized their significant historical importance.
Of the 1869 folio, institutional collections worldwide hold only four known copies, underscoring its rarity.
Holbein's Artistic Legacy
Art historians recognize Hans Holbein the Younger (1497–1543) for his detailed portraits and intricate designs. He earned recognition as a leading artist of the Northern Renaissance. This folio showcases his contributions to goldsmithing and jewelry design. It includes commissioned works created for Tudor royalty.
Holbein designed a gold cup for Queen Jane Seymour, which stands out among the featured works. In addition, Holbein created a chimney piece originally commissioned for King Henry VIII, which Horace Walpole later owned. Dr. Alfred Woltmann, a prominent art historian, praised these designs in Holbein und Seine Zeit. He emphasized their importance in understanding Renaissance craftsmanship.
Publication and Context
The Arundel Society for Promoting the Knowledge of Art printed the folio in London. This publication reflects a 19th-century effort to document significant artistic works. Each page bears the approval of the Art and Science Department.
