Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms First Edition (1929)

$600-$800

$1,178

a farewell to arms first edition

A first edition, first issue copy of A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway, published in 1929 by Charles Scribner's Sons, was sold at Britannic Auctions. This edition included its original Art Deco-style dust jacket, a key element for collectors. Though the dust jacket showed signs of wear, including chipping and a tear along the spine, but its presence still increased the overall value.

The black cloth cover with gilt title panels remained intact, and the pages displayed the typical age-toning. Despite these issues, the book was in solid condition. The auction took place on December 7, 2024, and the final sale price reached $1,178, surpassing the initial estimate of $600 to $800.

Collecting A Farewell to Arms First Editions: What to Know

First editions of A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway hold their value due to their literary and historical significance. Set against the backdrop of World War I, this novel is considered one of Hemingway’s defining works. Collectors look for first editions that include their original dust jackets, especially when those jackets remain in excellent condition. The overall condition of the book and dust jacket plays a significant role in determining auction value.

For comparison, a presentational copy of A Farewell to Arms featuring a lengthy personal inscription from Hemingway was sold at Christie’s in 2002 for $77,675. This highlights how high prices for first editions can climb, depending on rarity and physical condition.

Dust Jacket Design of A Farewell to Arms First Edition

The first edition of A Farewell to Arms, published by Charles Scribner's Sons in 1929, features a dust jacket designed by Cleonike Damianakes Wilkins, known professionally as "Cleon." Wilkins was recognized for her ability to blend Art Deco and classical Hellenistic styles, creating a cover that stood out on bookstore shelves. Her design aimed to make Hemingway’s war novel appeal to a wider audience.

Hemingway’s editor, Maxwell Perkins, selected Wilkins to create a cover that would distinguish the book from other war literature. To achieve this, she drew inspiration from Sandro Botticelli’s Venus and Mars. Wilkins used classical figures to represent love enduring through the chaos of war. The cover’s blue tones and geometric details complemented the novel’s serious themes without overwhelming its message.

Although the design contributed to the novel’s widespread success, Hemingway never liked the cover. In a letter to Perkins, he complained about the portrayal of the figures. “I cannot admire the awful legs on that woman or the gigantic belly muscles [on the man],” Hemingway wrote. Despite his disapproval, the book became a bestseller, with over 100,000 copies sold across seven printings by the end of 1929.
